ENTRY LEVEL – Rookie Firefighter
DEFINITION: Under general supervision employees perform the tasks of fire suppression, daily vehicle and equipment checks, station maintenance and providing medical first responder care. Employees also attend training sessions, conduct fire inspections, pre-fire plans, fire safety education, hydrant and hose testing as well as other duties assigned by the shift officers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
18 Years of Age (at time of application)
High School Diploma or equivalent
Valid South Carolina Driver’s License (must obtain CDL-B within 6 months)
NFPA Firefighter 1
Haz-Mat Operations
Flammable Liquids/Gas Firefighting
CPR/AED
First Aid
DOT Medical First Responder preferred (must obtain within 6 months)
APPLICATION
All potential candidates must first start by completing a South Greenville Fire Department application. Applications can be filled out at SGFD Headquarters or online.
WRITTEN EXAMINATION
All candidates must complete a 100 question multiple choice test that will be based on the IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting (4th edition) manual. A short section of math is also included.
FIREFIGHTER AGILITY TEST (FFAT)
The South Greenville Fire Department Firefighter Agility Test is designed to allow applicants to demonstrate they have the physical abilities to successfully conduct firefighting tasks at an emergency scene. The candidates will proceed through seven evolutions while wearing full turnout gear and breathing apparatus.
FFAT EVENTS
Platform Climb: Before starting the agility test, the applicant will climb the department’s platform ladder. Helmet and gloves only will be worn during this part of the agility test.
EVOLUTION 1: STAIR CLIMB WITH HIGH RISE PACK
Target Evaluation: Upper Body and Endurance
Description: Walk fifty feet while carrying a high rise pack, proceed up twenty steps and around a cone, continue back down steps and drop high rise pack in designated area.
Simulates: Carrying fire hose up stairs in fire situations
EVOLUTION 2: ADVANCING HOSE LINE
Target evaluation: Upper body, lower body, back strength, and endurance.
Description: Advance a charged 1 3/4 inch attack line 100 feet
Simulates: Pulling charged attack line
EVOLUTION 3: TOOL CARRY
Target evaluation: Arm strength, back strength, and endurance.
Description: Carry different tools used on the fire ground
Criteria: Move four different tools 50 feet and place in assigned area.
Simulates: Carrying tools on the fire ground
EVOLUTION 4: LADDER RAISE
Target evaluation: Upper body strength, back strength, and endurance.
Description: Raise the fly section of a stationary 24’ extension ladder the required height
Simulates: Raising ladders on the fire ground for gaining access to roofs
EVOLUTION 5: LOG PROP
Target evaluation: Upper body strength and endurance.
Description: Using a sledge hammer, strike a target 25 times.
Simulates: Chopping through roof materials, doors, and walls
EVOLUTION 6: PIKE POLE
Target evaluation: Upper body strength and endurance
Description: Use a pike pole to push a metal plate up 15 times
Simulates: Pulling ceiling in a structure to look for fire extension
EVOLUTION 7: WEIGHT DRAG
Target evaluation Upper and lower body strength and endurance
Description: Walk 50’ while dragging a 175 lbs firefighting dummy
Simulates: Removing victims and firefighters from a hostile environment
CAUTION: Applicants should consult their physician before starting any training program and before participating in the agility test. South Greenville Fire Department does not accept liability for physical or medical conditions experienced by applicants as a result of the agility test. Each applicant must sign a statement accepting personal liability for such conditions before being permitted to participate in the agility test.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
All applicants are subject to a complete background investigation including, but not limited to, a review of available educational, court, driving, medical, and employment records.
ORAL INTERVIEW
Applicants who successfully complete the written and agility test and whose background and driver’s license checks are acceptable will be scheduled for an oral interview. The board will score the candidate based on their interview and that will be added to the written and agility test to form a cumulative score. That cumulative score will be used to rank prospective employees by number. Each candidate will be notified by mail of their position. This list will be used to fill firefighter positions as they become available.
DRUG SCREEN/PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL
As positions are available and hiring is imminent, applicants who have been selected to continue in the process will be scheduled for a drug screen and pre-employment physical. Employment as a firefighter is contingent upon successful results of a thorough medical examination and drug screen.
BENEFITS PACKAGE
SALARY
The starting salary of a Rookie Firefighter is $20,150.00. Firefighter salary range is from $22,083.00 - $28,815.
WORKING HOURS
Shift work consists of 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty. Fire Department employees work on a 28-day cycle and report overtime, leave taken, etc. at the end of this cycle
VACATION/HOLIDAY/SICK LEAVE
All new employees will receive eight paid holidays, one week paid vacation, and will accrue one sick day per month.
HOSPITALIZATION, HEALTH, AND DENTAL INSURANCE
The coverage includes the employee and children which is 100% paid by South Greenville Fire District. Spouse is covered if health insurance is not offered with their full-time employer. Dental Insurance is also available and the employee is responsible for 100% of the dental coverage.
RETIREMENT
Retirement benefits are provided through South Carolina State Police Retirement. Employees may retire after 25 years in the system. www.retirement.sc.gov
